Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson 2: Star Stuff (Toro Y Moi) Vinyl LP

Jazzy and psych excursions from Chaz Bundick and twin brothers The Mattson 2. After wowing us with several albums of slick R&B-infused don't-call-it-chillwave indie pop as Toro Y Moi and flipping the script on a handful of disco-fied house 12"s as Les Sins, Bundick continues to demonstrate his versatility with Star Stuff, a new record produced in collaboration with Jonathan and Jared Mattson. The project started with Bundick in more of a producer role, but the trio's chemistry naturally drew him out from behind the boards to join the Mattsons on vocal and instrumental duties. The result is a refreshingly modern and poppy marriage of psych and jazz fusion, recalling Bob James on the swirling, rhodes-laced jazz funk of "Cascade", Pat Metheny on the virtuosic jazz guitar-led "Don't Blame Yourself" and the sleepy drums and ring-modulator synth of Broadcast on "Disco Kid". Recommended.
